Description
Fennel seeds are harvested from one of several varieties of the fennel plant and belongs to the carrot family. They tend to be pale green to tan in color with an oval shape. Their taste is sweet and powerful and are preferred after meals in India especially in their roasted form (Saunf). Their minty flavor combined with their chewy texture that enters every crevice of your teeth makes them a natural mouth freshener.
Fennel seeds are tiny but mighty—they contain minerals like calcium that play a role in building bones and maintaining nerve and muscle function. They also have iron, an essential nutrient for growth and development, and magnesium which supports muscle and nerve functions. Fennel seeds also contain manganese, a mineral that is important for bone health and supporting the immune system.
In different parts of the world, fennel seeds are used in number of ways to cook different varieties. For an extra boost of flavor, they are added to salads, breads, soups and stews, curries, pastas, desserts etc.
